Rooted in SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Driven by Creative Storytelling
Storyteller, Visual Anthropologist & Non-Fiction Director
Carla is a self-shooting director, editor, and creative producer with over 12 years of experience crafting character-driven documentaries, human rights campaigns, and educational media across Scotland and internationally. Holding a BA in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics and an MA with Distinction in Film Directing from Edinburgh College of Art, her work sits at the intersection of research, decolonial ethics, and visually striking cinema.
My approach to filmmaking is informed by years of working alongside NGOs, research institutes, and vulnerable communities across Latin America and the UK. From documenting refugee journeys and military coups to exploring personal trauma, mental health, and climate justice, I prioritise non-extractive, collaborative and decolonial frameworks that build deep, enduring trust. Filmmaking, to me, is most powerful when it investigates, empowers and resonates with different communities and audiences.
I view documentary filmmaking as a collaborative, non-extractive partnership rather than a transaction, ensuring that vulnerable contributors, trauma narratives, and diverse community voices are represented with dignity, safety, and absolute integrity. I embed duty-of-care practices, trauma-informed communication, and mental health support directly into my production and post-production workflows. By establishing transparent boundaries and deep trust from day one, I create spaces where authentic storytelling can flourish naturally. As a multilingual professional fluent in English, Portuguese, French, and Italian, I bridge cultural and academic contexts, translating complex human experiences into compelling visual cinema.
Approach: Decolonial Ethics & Trauma-Informed Storytelling
What I Bring to Production Teams
Research & Narrative Precision: I help teams and directors find the heart of their films by serving as a researcher, consultant, or editor. Whether rewriting treatments or securing access to contributors, I specialise in translating complex academic research, climate policy, and social justice data into clear, emotionally resonant visual formats without losing political urgency.
Cross-Cultural & Multilingual Fluency: Fluent in English, Portuguese, French, and Italian, I communicate easily across international crews, shoot in diverse cultural contexts, and build deep rapport with global contributors.
Archive & Systems Mastery: From single-operator field shooting to managing multi-terabyte visual archives, I bring custom data-mapping systems (Excel/Premiere) and financial discipline (Xero/FreeAgent) to ensure every project runs smoothly from prep to delivery.
